Location, Location, Lo — Wait, Where Are We?
Hoboken/Weehawken confusion, our Edgewater Olympian, a great Union City restaurant & more.
Does This New Building Exist In Two Towns At Once? An Investigation.
Hoboken Point, a piece of which is pictured above, is a new luxury rental* nestled in Weehawken Cove that had its first residents move in on July 1. We’re not here to debate the price, amenities, or design/decor — our only interest is discovering where they are located. And you’d think that’d be easy, but it is not.
Copy below is from the Hoboken Point website homepage, with bolding added by us:
“…it’s clear to see why our modern apartments in Hoboken are the premiere lifestyle choice…”
“our Hoboken waterfront apartments.”
But on the website’s Neighborhood page:
“…the unique locations of our Weehawken apartments near Hoboken, offers the very best…”
So it’s in Hoboken, but also near Hoboken, but also in Weehawken? When you google “Hoboken Point” on desktop, the first non-sponsored listing, seen below, shows it as “in Hoboken” and “in Weehawken” — at the same time. Cue: Twilight Zone theme 🌀
At this point we were super confused. And when you walk right by it, as seen in the lead picture above, you have a sign indicating the town line, and by its placement, one might imagine that at least 1/3 is in Hoboken. Like maybe the gym has treadmills in Weehawken, but a rowing machine in Hoboken?
But really, who cares?
Well, people who understand taxation might care, and people who work on DPW stuff would care, but mostly, parents care: What school district is it in?
We are here for you. We picked up the phone and used it to do something other than google. We made what is known as a “phone call” — yes — by pressing a 10-digit numerical code found on the Hoboken Point website, we were able to talk to a human who was there. The nice person who answered the phone for Hoboken Point said… drumroll… 🥁
“IT IS IN WEEHAWKEN!”
Tah dah! Now you know. Maybe we should bring them a welcome lasagna? What do you say? Downtown, Heights, Uptown, POPI — let’s band together to say howdy and introduce our new neighbors to our local customs.
Correction 8/2: We originally referred to this building as a “condo” because this is how we refer to all these buildings, but technically it’s a rental, not a condo, as a nice person on a Facebook group pointed out, so apologies. We still think the headline was better with the word “condo”— but since we learned it’s not true — we changed it, just a few hours after publish.
Leonia HS Grad Runs Off To Paris…
Jaden Marchan, 18, who made headlines when he won the 400m dash for Leonia at the recent NJ Meet of Champions, is currently in Paris competing in the Olympics for Trinidad and Tobago—and we could not be more proud. We met Jaden years ago because of a Edgewater / Jersey City / Weehawken friend connection, and seeing him make it to the games is so cool.
We asked his mom, Sujin Lee, about how it feels to have a kid in the Olympics. Was he a fast baby? Lee told the Gazette that her kid "won fastest boy in the 100m in 1st grade” and then she “never thought about it again” — because Jaden played soccer, football and basketball — until he picked up running again his sophomore year of high school. She told us the following via text:
“The stars and planets all aligned to give Jaden this opportunity to compete at the 2024 Olympics in Paris. His coach Mika Scott and everyone at Southside Track Club and Trinidadian Mentor Ian Morris, who was a national record holder for the 400m for Trinidad and Tobago, and his running club Siparia Athletics — they believe in him and made it all happen. Ian is a childhood friend of Jaden’s dad Anthony Marchan, who are both from the village of Siparia.”
His self-described “proud mom” also told us Marchan is bound to run for Georgetown Track & Field in the fall, and that you can cheer on our local Olympic star by following him on Instagram here: instagram.com/jaden_marchan. 🏃🙌
This Restaurant Is Awesome You Guys
That’s Fork Hill Kitchen in Union City, pictured above. This place still feels like the new kid on the block to us, but time flies, because it turns out they’ll be celebrating their 5-year anniversary in October. From their “About Us” page:
Located in Union City, NJ on top of Union Hill, Fork Hill Kitchen proudly serves fresh, seasonal American food to residents and visitors of the rapidly developing neighborhood in which it resides and those of the surrounding Hoboken, Jersey City and Weehawken communities.
Founded in 2019 by a local couple, Fork Hill Kitchen was built around a love for food and bringing people together, with executive chef Eric Clemente's casual, simple and modern American menu served in a warm, inviting atmosphere.
Every time we go, we are welcomed warmly, and the food is always delicious. Though we aren’t regulars, we’re treated like we are. And the same goes for the bar—whether you’re by yourself or in a group, the bar is cozy and a source of good conversation and new friends.
And the friendliness isn’t confined to the clientele—the last time we were there, one of the owners went out their way to offer to help us with the parking. In the end we found a spot unaided, but how nice is that?
FHK gets extra points from the Weehawken Gazette for:
Buttery lighting that makes everyone look healthier
Low-to-no music so you can have a conversation
Its “hidden gem” location between Weehawken/Union City Reservoir Park and uphill from Hoboken
A comfortable bar that’s great to eat and drink at
Remaining excellent even when only doing takeout during the pandemic
Having a sweet wine list / regional beer menu
Being really nice
So try them if you have not, and give them a follow on Instagram here: instagram.com/forkhillkitchen
Note: the website says they will be on vacation following Sunday brunch on August 25, and back for dinner on September 11—so get there before that/double check before you go.
FYI This is not a paid endorsement: we paid for 100% of our meal/got no freebies. Fork Hill Kitchen also had no idea we’d be writing about them. If we ever do get payola, or freebies, we will disclose, and we won’t ever write dishonest things — because community trust is important and life is too short.
In Brief
🎺 Apparently there’s live music outside the Sheraton Lincoln Harbor / Beneci’s restaurant on Friday and Saturday evenings. The restaurant told us it’s 5-8PM, but we see the website has slightly different hours listed on their events page, so maybe check before you go. They have outdoor seating, nice air-conditioning in a heat wave, and a nice bartender who told us about the music.
💪 In 2024, Clarity Fitness moved off Park Avenue to a new condo nearby. Regulars followed it, and new members joined, but as it’s off the main drag, many people don’t know it never left us. Here’s how to find it: 121 34th St. in Union City, at the ground floor of the Marq North apartment building. Special deal: new members can get a free trial class if they mention “Weehawken Gazette.”
