Hot Hot Hot!
Weehawken Gazette #9 is stuffed with sizzling stuff — just make sure you're hydrated before consuming.
We’ve got a local video that’ll make you cry, a way to score calzone while saving the planet, and so much more — so let’s jump in, shall we?
Waterworld
What’s cool (Hint: it’s our pool): Major props to the town of Weehawken for opening the pool earlier than planned to help us deal with the heat wave. The Weehawken pool complex has been open on weekends since Memorial Day but the pool was not slated to open on weekdays until Tuesday June 25. Why Tuesday? And why is the pool only open 4-8P this week? Wild speculation: Many of our fabulous pool workers are high school students, and school ends Monday.
For context: New York City — the shiny object seen in the photo above— is broiling too. But according to Max Rivlin-Nadler, a journalist writing for Hell Gate NYC, exactly none of New York City’s 79 outdoor pools will be open before June 27 and there’ll be no adult lap swim there due to lack of lifeguards, etc. Oy.

And now this 💣🐚: Weehawken pool memberships are now ‘sold out’ for the season. The township’s pool page says “Weehawken Township Pool Complex is no longer taking memberships. We have reached the maximum capacity limit two months ahead of previous years.”

Weehawken Schools shared this video with the caption, “Don’t blink! HS graduation comes faster than you think!”
Omggggg…. Who let the cat in here?! 😭
The video thanks the class of 2024… and the class of 2037. 🥹
Wonderful acting and execution. And yeah we cried! A little. Go away.
When we asked who made it, Natalie Giusto Ferullo said, “our district tech guru Brian Calligy recorded this today in ONE TAKE!”
To that we say, “RESPECT!”
Thank you Mr. Calligy for always helping with the tech, while also going the extra mile to bring more joy into our community.
Running Water
In the last Weehawken Gazette, we told you about the first-ever community run which took place last Sunday along the waterfront. We can confirm runners aged 14 to AARP participated.* If you count the athletes in the strollers, the ages of the runners spanned 60+ years. Everyone met new neighbors. Heavy on Weehawken, but the crowd hailed from Jersey City to Edgewater.
This rotund reporter ran 5k at her trademark sweating snail pace, but she did not walk once and wants the world to know that.
Many thanks to Bagels on Park for kicking off this 1st run by sponsoring with delicious bagels.
Note: Any biz that feeds/waters these community runs will get all our love.

Massive shout out to the very handsome guy who works in finance at [big company redacted] who said he’s lived along the waterfront since 2017 and only found out about the run because he saw it in the Weehawken Gazette.**
In Brief
TooGoodToGo is an app where restaurants offer food that would otherwise be thrown out. You pay for and pick up a “Surprise Bag,” usually offered in the hours before the bakery/restaurant/cafe closes. If you aren’t picky, the offerings are a steal. The food you get is not garbage, but it would be garbage by the next day, so you help reduce waste — and you get a deal. Lots of businesses in Hoboken are doing it, and a few in Union City. But right now not one business in Weehawken is doing it. OK here’s a nudge: Weehawken Gazette will feature the 1st biz in Weehawken to sign up to this app and also let us know that you did.
Update after publish 6/21: a kind reader pointed out that Fabiano’s Pizza is in the app! And we found Whole Foods Weehawken is also there. Our bad. We will provide a correction and shout out in the next Gazette but our offer still stands to feature a biz that joins.
Seen below: Watercolor painting of Blvd East by Brad Marullo of West New York. You can see and purchase his art in a frame with a magnet, as seen below, or as greeting cards. You can find them at the French bakery in West New York we wrote about here back in April. 🥐

*Though known as the org that courts you when you are 50/thinking about retiring, you really can join AARP at any age, which is important to know if you want the discounts.
**He really was/is handsome but if you tell us you read the Gazette and got some useful info from it, your hotness goes up by 1000x — it’s just a fact. Reading local/supporting local is sex-hay. 🙌
